SDT News: The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its steadfast position in support of the justice of the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s full sovereignty over their natural resources. Doha also reiterated its backing for the Palestinians’ legitimate right to establish an independent state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This reaffirmation came in a statement delivered by Talal Abdulaziz Al Naama, Second Secretary at Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee at UN Headquarters in New York. The discussion centered on the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, as well as the rights of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources.

Al Naama emphasized that the Israeli occupation and its continued violations of international law and human rights, including the actions of Israeli settlers and security forces, have deprived Palestinians of their basic rights — most notably the right to self-determination.

He called for an end to the Israeli occupation and its damaging effects on the social and economic development of both the Palestinian people and the Arab residents of the occupied Syrian Golan.

The Qatari representative also welcomed the UN General Assembly’s endorsement of the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, issued last year, which declared the occupation and its related policies illegal under international law. The opinion urged Israel to terminate its unlawful presence in the occupied territories and comply fully with its international obligations.

Al Naama further highlighted that, since the beginning of the ongoing conflict, Qatar has continued to provide humanitarian and development assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, despite the severe restrictions on aid delivery. This support includes thousands of tons of food, medicine, medical supplies, shelter materials, and field hospitals, as well as medical treatment for injured and ill civilians.

He added that Qatar’s total contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) have reached nearly USD 49 million, in addition to a new multi-year funding agreement (2025–2026) worth USD 20 million, aimed at helping the agency sustain its operations amid persistent financial challenges.

Concluding his remarks, Al Naama reaffirmed that Qatar remains committed to mediation efforts, working alongside Egypt, Turkey, and the United States to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and to continue delivering vital humanitarian assistance to ease the suffering of the Palestinian people.
