DST News: Guinea-Bissau’s military has detained several senior officers accused of plotting a coup just days before the launch of the November election campaign.
Deputy army chief General Mamadu Ture Kuruma confirmed the arrests, saying the military foiled an attempt to “undermine the constitutional order.” The alleged plot, led by Brigadier General Dahaba Nawalna of a military training school, involved other senior figures including Commanders Domingos Nhanke and Mario Midana, who were arrested at their homes in the capital, Bissau.
Military authorities condemned the act, warning that it threatened the country’s peace, stability, and economic growth. The number of those involved has not been disclosed.
President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, who came to power in 2020, described the incident as another attempt to destabilize the government, following a previous coup bid in 2023.
Embalo, facing opposition claims that his term has expired, vowed that “no disorder will be tolerated” as the campaign begins. The president recently reversed his earlier decision to step down and announced plans to seek a second term in the upcoming November 23 elections.
Guinea-Bissau, long plagued by political unrest and multiple coups since independence in 1974, has struggled to maintain democratic stability despite efforts to strengthen civilian rule since 2014.
