DST News: The government has once again confirmed that the upcoming parliamentary elections will take place in February next year.
The reaffirmation came after an emergency meeting of the Council of Advisers held at the Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presiding.
Speaking at a press briefing at Karabi Hall following the meeting, Law Adviser Professor Dr Asif Nazrul said, “The government remains committed to holding the next parliamentary polls in the first half of February 2026.”
He informed that the meeting primarily discussed finalising the July National Charter (constitutional amendment) Order proposed by the National Consensus Commission, alongside preparations for a national referendum and decisions regarding its content.
Professor Nazrul said the council expressed appreciation to the Consensus Commission and all political parties for their continuous efforts in building agreement on major reform initiatives.
However, he noted that the meeting observed lingering disagreements among political parties regarding the timing and subject of the proposed referendum.
Expressing concern over these divisions, the council stressed the importance of reaching a final decision on the referendum’s schedule and content, as well as finding ways to reconcile the differing views raised in the July Charter.
The Council of Advisers also called upon the long-standing allied parties of the anti-fascist movement to engage in discussions and offer unified recommendations to the government within the next seven days, if possible.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, and Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam were also present at the briefing.
