DST News: Speaking at a joint rally of allied movements in Paltan, Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that without acknowledging the July Revolution, no election will take place in 2026. “To see the election in 2026, the July Revolution must first be recognized,” he stated.

He added: “To recognize the July Revolution, the July Charter must be given legal legitimacy. Without a legal foundation for the July Charter, there is no possibility of holding an election.”

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman made these remarks while addressing a gathering of eight parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolon, and Khelafat Majlis, called for a five-point demand at Paltan in Dhaka on Tuesday (11 November).

He said: “The people who long for liberation in this country have one clear demand: a referendum must be held before the national election. All parties agree on the referendum. So why this delay and bargaining over the date?”

Referring to the discussions of the Consensus Commission, he said: “We, all parties, have signed in agreement. So holding the referendum first is logical. Through this, the legal foundation will be laid, InshaAllah, and on that basis the next national election will be held.”

He continued: “When that election is held, there will be no uncertainty or doubt. We want the national election to be held before Ramadan in February. No one should try to create confusion over this or shift the burden of responsibility onto others.”

Addressing the BNP, he asked: “If you do not show respect to the people through the July Charter, then how will you show respect to the people in the national election?”

The eight-party alliance announced a five-point program including: providing legal legitimacy to the July Charter, holding a referendum in November, and conducting elections through a Proportional Representation (PR) system.

Leaders and activists of the eight parties began gathering in Paltan and Baitul Mukarram areas from noon to join the rally.
