DST News: Pakistan is steadily cementing its place as a key player in international affairs, driven by its strategic location, growing diplomatic engagement, and continued efforts to promote regional stability. Its expanding role now goes far beyond security concerns, touching on economic cooperation, counterterrorism partnerships, and strong alignment with the aspirations of the Global South.

These insights were shared by Prof. Cheng Xizhong, Senior Research Fellow at the Charhar Institute, a Beijing-based think-tank specializing in diplomacy and international studies.

Speaking to APP, Prof. Cheng noted that Pakistan’s geography gives it a unique advantage as a crucial link between South Asia, Central Asia, and the Middle East. As an essential component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has strengthened Pakistan’s position as a regional trade and energy corridor. This development, he said, has turned Pakistan into an emerging economic hub by drawing increased foreign investment and enhancing its diplomatic weight.

On regional security, Prof. Cheng emphasized Pakistan’s central role. As a frontline nation in the fight against terrorism, it has provided critical intelligence and carried out major operations that have significantly weakened cross-border militant networks. Pakistan’s recent mediation efforts in the Middle East, he added, have further demonstrated its credibility as a neutral and constructive facilitator in times of geopolitical tension.

Prof. Cheng also highlighted Pakistan’s consistent efforts to represent the interests of the Global South. Through its membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Pakistan has championed equitable development, climate justice, and the broader concerns of developing nations. Its long-standing contribution to UN peacekeeping missions also reflects its commitment to global peace and security.

Despite external pressures and internal challenges, Pakistan has shown an ability to adapt strategically, turning complexities into opportunities. By maintaining balanced relations with major world powers and staying focused on regional priorities, the country has secured a distinct and respected position in global diplomacy.

According to Prof. Cheng, as global power dynamics continue to evolve, Pakistan’s role as a connector, negotiator, and defender of developing countries’ interests will only become more significant in the coming years.
