DST News: The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) in Dhaka on Monday handed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina the death penalty after finding her guilty of crimes against humanity linked to last year’s July–August uprising, which left more than 1,000 people dead.
In a separate charge, the tribunal also ordered that she remain in prison for the rest of her life.
The long-anticipated verdict was announced in a tightly secured, crowded courtroom, with a three-member panel led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumder. The bench also included Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Security was visibly intensified across Dhaka as the city braced for the tribunal’s decision in the high-profile case.
