DST News: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has urged world leaders to intensify international pressure to halt the escalating violence in Sudan, describing the situation as “ongoing and utterly horrifying” during a statement to Parliament on Tuesday.

Starmer told MPs that he raised the crisis during the G20 summit in Johannesburg over the weekend, where he pushed for coordinated action to break the barriers blocking humanitarian aid and to ensure accountability for atrocities committed in the conflict.

He stressed the need for unified global efforts “to stop the slaughter” and secure a “sustained ceasefire” that could pave the way for a transition back to civilian rule in Sudan.

The UK faces heightened responsibility due to its role as the official penholder for Sudan at the UN Security Council, a position that gives London significant influence over international action on the crisis.

The government is also confronting scrutiny over allegations that British-made military equipment may have ended up in the hands of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF). According to reports cited by The Guardian, UN investigators submitted evidence in June 2024 and again in March 2025 suggesting that the United Arab Emirates may have transferred UK-manufactured items to the RSF. Despite this, the British government reportedly approved additional exports of similar equipment to the UAE.

Opposition parties, including the Liberal Democrats, have urged the government to halt arms sales to the Gulf state. The UAE, for its part, has consistently denied providing military support to the RSF.

Earlier this month, the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor warned that atrocities committed by RSF fighters in El-Fasher may amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
