DST News: Around 3,000 people gathered in Berlin on Friday to protest Germany’s newly approved military service law. The legislation, passed after months of heated debate in the Bundestag, aims to expand the Bundeswehr amid growing concerns over Russian aggression and NATO’s push for stronger European defense.

Eighteen-year-old protester Tess Datzer expressed frustration that her generation might be sent to war “for a country that does little for us.” She criticized the government for underfunding pensions, public services, and climate initiatives, saying there is no good reason for young people to fight.

Organiser Ronja Ruh highlighted the contrast between military spending and failing public services, noting schools with outdated technology, too few teachers, and dilapidated buildings.

The new law sets targets of up to 260,000 active soldiers and 200,000 reservists by 2035. It combines a voluntary service system with the option for needs-based conscription if recruitment falls short. All men born after January 1, 2008, will undergo medical evaluation, and both young men and women will be asked to declare willingness to serve, though only men are required to respond.

Across Europe, nations including France, Italy, Belgium, and Nordic and Baltic states are similarly expanding military service to strengthen defenses in response to perceived Russian threats. Germany’s military leaders have warned that Moscow could target NATO countries in the coming years, prompting a push for greater preparedness.
