The nation plunged into deep mourning as millions bade a final farewell to BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who was laid to rest with full state honours beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, at Zia Udyan on Wednesday.

An unprecedented sea of mourners from across the country converged on Manik Mia Avenue and surrounding areas, defying cold weather to pay their last respects to Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and a towering symbol of democratic resistance. Scenes of open weeping and solemn tribute marked the day as people from all walks of life joined her namaz-e-janaza and burial rites.

World leaders and foreign dignitaries also gathered in Dhaka, reflecting Khaleda Zia’s regional and international stature. Representatives from neighbouring countries paid condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh.

Following her burial at around 4:50pm, members of the armed forces rendered a state salute, while wreaths were placed on behalf of the President, the Chief Adviser, BNP leaders and the three services chiefs. Doa and munajat were offered seeking eternal peace for her soul.

Khaleda Zia passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. A three-time prime minister, she played a decisive role in restoring parliamentary democracy in 1991. She is survived by her elder son Tarique Rahman, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. The government has declared three days of state mourning, while BNP is observing seven days of party mourning in her honour.
