DST News: National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman has requested the United States to ease travel for Bangladeshi businessmen following the introduction of a visa bond requirement, particularly seeking exemption for short-term B1 business visas. He made the request during a meeting with US Under-Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker in Washington DC.
Hooker acknowledged the issue and said the US would positively consider the request, adding that the bond policy could be reviewed if visa overstays decline. She also praised Bangladesh’s cooperation in repatriating undocumented migrants.
The meeting covered Bangladesh’s upcoming elections, trade and economic ties, the Rohingya crisis, and regional issues. The US reaffirmed its support for Bangladesh’s democratic transition and a free and fair election, while appreciating Bangladesh’s role in hosting Rohingya refugees and expressing willingness to work on burden-sharing solutions.
Dr Rahman also sought US support for increased trade, DFC financing, semiconductor development, and Bangladesh’s possible role in an international stabilization force in Gaza, to which the US responded positively.
