Rape trial casts unwelcome spotlight on Norway’s royal family

DST News: Norway’s royal family has been thrust into intense public scrutiny as the country’s largest trial in years begins against Marius Borg Høiby, the 29-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit. Høiby faces 38 charges, including the rape of four women, assault, threats, property damage, drug offences and traffic violations, and could receive a sentence of more than 10 years if convicted.

Neither Crown Princess Mette-Marit nor Crown Prince Haakon will attend the seven-week trial, and the palace has sought to distance itself, stressing that Høiby is not a public figure or a member of the royal household. However, his close personal ties to the family have made the case deeply uncomfortable for the monarchy.

The rape allegations, involving women who were allegedly incapacitated, form the core of the case and have triggered what commentators describe as the biggest scandal in the history of Norway’s royal family. While Høiby has admitted some lesser offences, he denies the most serious charges. The trial has intensified public criticism of the royals, challenging their long-standing image of openness and moral authority.
