DST News: Bangladesh’s journey in the Women’s ODI World Cup came to an end after a heartbreaking 7-run defeat to Sri Lanka in a must-win match. Chasing a target of 203, the Tigresses were bowled out for 195, falling just short of victory and a place in the semi-finals.

Batting first, Sri Lanka suffered an early setback when opener Vishwami Gunaratne was dismissed by Maruf on the very first ball. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu steadied the innings with a 72-run stand for the second wicket, scoring 46 runs before getting out. Nilashka contributed 37 before being bowled for a golden duck soon after. Sri Lanka’s innings then faltered with regular wickets, ending at 202.

For Bangladesh, Swarna Akhtar claimed three wickets while Rabeya Khan picked up two.

In response, Bangladesh had a shaky start as Rubaiya Haider was dismissed early. Farzana’s departure for 24 added to the pressure, and Sobhana Mostari’s cheap dismissal for 8 left the team struggling at 44 for 3. However, Sharmin Akhtar and captain Nigar Sultana revived hopes with a strong 82-run partnership. Shamima made 64 before retiring hurt, and Jyoti followed up with a fine half-century.

With 10 runs needed from 9 balls and six wickets remaining, Bangladesh appeared poised for victory. But a dramatic collapse saw five wickets fall for just one run. Jyoti’s dismissal for 77 sealed the defeat, ending Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign and their dream of reaching the semi-finals.
