DST News: On 13 November 2025, a nationwide protest environment unfolded in Bangladesh in response to a “lockdown” called by the banned Awami League (AL) and a counter-mobilisation by other political organisations. The main developments:

  • The former ruling AL had announced a dawn-to-dusk “Dhaka lockdown” programme, ahead of a verdict date in a trial of ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity.

  • In response, the Islamist student body Islami Chhatra Shibir staged protests in Dhaka, and the Islamist political party Jamaat‑e‑Islami (JI) along with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) took to the streets in various cities.

  • Major cities, especially Dhaka, were placed on high alert with heightened security and fewer visible activities: traffic was noticeably lighter, shops and offices operated with caution, and some educational institutions suspended classes.
