DST News: Syrian government forces have moved closer to asserting control across the country following intense fighting with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the subsequent signing of a ceasefire. Scenes of joy and relief were reported as Syrians welcomed the halt in hostilities.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa is scheduled to meet SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, also known as Mazloum Kobani, on Monday. A planned meeting a day earlier was postponed after Abdi was unable to attend due to adverse weather conditions.
Under the terms now taking shape, the SDF is expected to fully integrate its fighters into the national army, while public institutions and essential services in SDF-held areas will be transferred to federal government control.
Government troops have also taken over the strategically vital al-Omar and al-Tanak oilfields in eastern Deir Az Zor, a key provision of the March 10, 2025 agreement between Damascus and the SDF, further strengthening the state’s grip on critical energy resources.
