DST News: Bangladesh headed into the break with a well-deserved 1–0 lead over India in their AFC Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium today.
The home side started with intent, pressing high and moving the ball with confidence. Their early dominance was rewarded in the 12th minute through a swift counterattack. Rakib Hossain burst down the left flank and whipped in a low cross that found an unmarked Sheikh Morsalin. The young forward calmly tapped the ball past an advancing Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, leaving the Indian goalkeeper with no chance. The goal also marked Morsalin’s seventh in national colours.
India, shaken but determined to respond, nearly found an equalizer in the 31st minute. A rare lapse from Bangladeshi goalkeeper Mitul Marma left the net exposed, allowing Lallianzuala Chhangte a clear attempt on goal. But defender Hamza Choudhury reacted brilliantly, clearing the shot off the line and conceding only a corner—averting what looked like a certain goal.
Bangladesh’s starting lineup featured Italian-based midfielder Shamit Shome and promising attacker Morsalin, while regular captain Jamal Bhuyan and midfielder Sohel Rana Jr were left out. Veteran Sohel Rana Sr wore the armband for today’s fixture.
