DST News: The government has introduced a new incentive scheme offering cash rewards for the retrieval of firearms and ammunition stolen from police custody, as part of heightened security measures ahead of the 13th parliamentary elections scheduled for February.
The announcement follows an earlier declaration made on August 25, when Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury first introduced bounties for information leading to the recovery of weapons taken during the unrest following August 5 last year.
In a statement issued today, Police Headquarters confirmed that the reward amount will vary based on the type of weapon returned.
Under the reward structure:
- Tk 5 lakh will be offered for each Light Machine Gun (LMG)
- Tk 1.5 lakh for every Submachine Gun (SMG)
- Tk 1 lakh for a Chinese rifle
- Tk 50,000 for a pistol or shotgun
- And Tk 500 for each individual bullet recovered
Authorities are urging the public to immediately report or surrender any missing firearms or ammunition to the nearest police station.
The government has also guaranteed full confidentiality for anyone providing information or returning weapons.
Officials stressed that the initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen public security and ensure that no illegal weapons remain in circulation during the sensitive pre-election period.
