DST News: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali has vowed to identify and prosecute everyone involved in the killing of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, describing the case as complex and involving multiple actors.
Addressing a sit-in organised by Inqilab Mancha at Shahbagh on Saturday, the commissioner said investigators would soon uncover the full circumstances surrounding the murder and disclose the identities of those responsible. He expressed optimism that the charge sheet would be submitted by January 7, noting that the probe is advancing rapidly.
All law-enforcement agencies, including the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), have been deployed to track down the masterminds, he said.
Police have so far arrested 11 people in connection with the case. Those detained include close relatives of the prime suspect, Faisal Karim Masud—his parents, wife, brother-in-law—as well as a woman described as his associate.
Investigators have recovered two pistols believed to have been used in the attack, now undergoing forensic examination at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The motorcycle used by the assailants has also been seized by the Detective Branch.
The commissioner revealed that a large sum of money was allegedly spent to carry out the killing, adding that a cheque worth Tk 218 crore has been recovered during the investigation.
According to police, Faisal Karim Masud and an accomplice shot Hadi on December 12 while he was travelling by motorcycle toward Suhrawardy Udyan after campaigning near Motijheel Mosque. Hadi was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being transferred to Evercare Hospital and later flown to Singapore for advanced treatment.
He died on December 18 at Singapore General Hospital.
A case was initially filed at Paltan Police Station on December 14 on charges including attempted murder and criminal conspiracy. Following Hadi’s death, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate ordered the inclusion of murder charges under Section 302 of the Penal Code on December 20.
