DST News: The International Committee of the Red Cross on Friday night transferred the body of an individual believed to be an Israeli hostage from Gaza to Israeli authorities, marking a significant development in ongoing efforts to recover those killed or abducted during past conflicts and the October 7 attacks.

The remains, transported in a Red Cross convoy through Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, were handed over to Israeli security forces and taken directly to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute in Tel Aviv for formal identification. Officials say the process may take some time, as six Israeli families are waiting to learn whether the body belongs to one of their loved ones whose remains have not yet been returned.

Hamas announced earlier that it had located and would return the body, reportedly found in the Khan Younis area of southern Gaza. The announcement came shortly after Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) stated that it had initially held the remains and was coordinating their handover. PIJ did not clarify how it came to possess the body.

Israel believes the body may be that of one of six deceased hostages still held in Gaza. They include Lt. Hadar Goldin, killed in the 2014 Gaza war, as well as five people murdered during the October 7, 2023, attack in which Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people in southern Israel and abducted 251.

The five October 7 victims whose bodies remain missing are:

  • Meny Godard, 73, killed alongside his wife Ayelet in Kibbutz Be’eri.
  • Master Sgt. Ran Gvili, 24, killed while defending Kibbutz Alumim.
  • Dror Or, 48, murdered in his home in Kibbutz Be’eri.
  • Sudthisak Rinthalak, 43, an agricultural worker killed in Be’eri.
  • Lior Rudaeff, 61, killed near Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak while assisting the local defense team.

For the families of the missing, the return of remains marks both a step toward closure and a painful reminder of unresolved grief. Israeli officials emphasized that no conclusions would be drawn until forensic confirmation is complete.

The latest handover comes amid ongoing diplomatic and humanitarian negotiations concerning the fate of remaining hostages and the broader conflict in Gaza.
