DST News: Independent candidate Sharif Osman Hadi, also the spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, sustained critical injuries on Friday afternoon after being shot while travelling by rickshaw along Purana Paltan Culvert Road following Jumma prayers.
According to Inspector Md Faruk, who oversees the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Hadi came under fire from unknown attackers around 2:30 pm while conducting election campaigning in the Bijoynagar area.
“Two motorcycles approached his rickshaw, and one of the riders suddenly opened fire before speeding away,” Faruk said. Hadi was rushed to DMCH in a life-threatening condition.
Doctors at the emergency department performed initial procedures, including CPR, describing his condition as “extremely critical,” said Dr Mostaq Ahmed, residential surgeon of the emergency unit.
“Hadi has one bullet embedded in his head, while another struck near his ear,” he noted.
A CT scan was completed before he was moved to the operation theatre.
Hospital sources said that a surgical team began operating around 4:30 pm, working to remove a bullet from his jaw and address other injuries. They later observed a slight improvement in his blood pressure.
Earlier, an urgent call for B-negative blood was issued from Hadi’s verified Facebook page after doctors requested an immediate transfusion.
Misbah, who brought Hadi to the hospital, said he had just finished Jumma prayers and was passing through the Motijheel–Bijoynagar culvert area by rickshaw when the gunmen fired at him, hitting him below the left ear.
News of the attack drew large crowds to the DMCH emergency area, prompting the deployment of army personnel to manage the situation.
Armed forces members took positions at the emergency entrance as hundreds of people gathered.
Police have not yet identified the shooter or made any arrests.
