By DST Editorial Team,
The visible decline in the health of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has once again drawn the nation into a swirl of political conversation, emotional appeals, and partisan rhetoric. Yet amid the noise, one fact must be stated clearly: this is a moment of human concern, not a moment for political gain. It is certainly not a moment for the BNP to seek compliments or political mileage.
Khaleda Zia, now in critical condition and receiving intensive medical care, stands as a symbol of resilience, courage, and uncompromising leadership in Bangladesh’s political history. Her contributions to the nation extend far beyond party politics. She led a nine-year-long struggle against the autocratic Ershad regime, demonstrating steadfast commitment to democracy and mobilizing the nation to reclaim its constitutional freedoms. She also remained a determined opposition leader for 16 years against Sheikh Hasina’s increasingly fascist tendencies, resisting attempts to consolidate power and weaken democratic institutions. Her political resolve, strategic vision, and ability to galvanize support in both government and opposition roles have left an indelible mark on the country.
Today, Khaleda Zia remains a towering figure in Bangladesh’s political history, admired for her unwavering courage and dedication to the nation. While her health is critical and demands our care and attention, it also offers an opportunity for reflection on her remarkable legacy. Rather than being a point of political contention, this moment calls for unity, respect, and recognition of the decades she has devoted to the country. Her enduring influence can inspire her party and the nation to pursue constructive leadership, grounded in ideas, service, and commitment to democracy.
What is needed today is a tone of humanity—quiet, respectful, and apolitical. Khaleda Zia deserves dignity and proper medical care, just as every citizen does. The government has acted positively, ensuring that she receives the best possible support, while Dr. Muhammad Yunus is personally overseeing her care with the expertise and compassion the situation demands. Beyond safeguarding her medical rights, the rest should remain outside the arena of political theatre.
Bangladesh has experienced enough political bitterness to last generations. Moments like this remind us that beyond politics lie deeper values: humanity, compassion, and dignity. Khaleda Zia’s critical health condition is a national concern because she is a former head of government, a historic figure, an uncompromising leader, and a champion of democracy who played a decisive role in the fight against autocracy and in resisting Sheikh Hasina’s prolonged authoritarianism over more than sixteen years. May the Almighty Allah cure and save her life.
