DST News: Bangladesh is celebrating Victory Day today, marking 54 years since the country achieved independence through the historic War of Liberation in 1971. The day commemorates the supreme sacrifices of three million martyrs and the suffering of countless others who paved the way for freedom.
The observance began at dawn with a 31-gun salute, followed by tributes at the National Memorial, where President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus laid wreaths in honor of the fallen heroes. Families of the Bir Shrestha, wounded freedom fighters, diplomats, political leaders and citizens from all walks of life also paid homage.
The national flag is being flown at all public and private institutions and Bangladesh missions abroad, while major roads and buildings across the country have been decorated. Special cultural programmes, discussions, exhibitions and sports events are being held nationwide to highlight the spirit of the Liberation War.
State-run and private media channels are airing special programmes, while Liberation War films and documentaries are being screened free for students. Museums and entertainment venues are open to the public without entry fees, particularly for children.
A key highlight of the day is a series of fly-past demonstrations by the Army, Navy and Air Force, along with a large-scale parachuting display aimed at setting a world record by carrying the highest number of national flags.
Special prayers are being offered at places of worship across the country, seeking peace for the martyrs, well-being for wounded veterans and continued progress for Bangladesh.
