DST News: Russia is prepared to further expand cooperation with Iran in all sectors. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made the announcement on Monday (October 21). Moscow has recently been seeking to build closer political and strategic ties with Tehran.
Peskov said, “Russia is undoubtedly ready to enhance cooperation with Iran in all areas. Iran is our partner, and our relations are developing rapidly and positively.”
He also accused European countries of creating “excessive pressure” in talks over Iran’s nuclear program, which, he said, has made the situation “extremely complicated.”
Moscow has previously expressed its support for Iran. Earlier this year, Russia condemned the joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The purpose of that strike was reportedly to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. However, Iran maintains that it is not developing any nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, on the same day, a special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet with Iran’s National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani in Tehran. Just a week earlier, Larijani visited Moscow to deliver a message from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Putin.
In January this year, Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries, though the pact does not include any mutual defense provisions.
Russia stated that it is supplying military equipment to Tehran through legal channels. On the other hand, Iran has provided drones to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine.
Additionally, last month, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy corporation Rosatom signed a $25 billion agreement with Iran. Under the deal, four new nuclear power plants will be built in Iran. The country, which is currently facing an energy shortage, operates its only functional nuclear power plant—built by Russia—in the southern city of Bushehr.
